What to Wear When You Hit the Beach This Weekend

4462808764_50bd6694ee_b1

With Memorial Day just around the bend, all talk around the warehouse has turned to where to go and what to pack for our respective weekend getaways.

The only prerequisite is water, whether it be the ocean, a pool…hell, even a kiddie pool sounds pretty magical (see below).

Anyway, on to the pieces that made the cut:

Dreaming of being poolside in the sweltering heat…too bad it’s 58 degrees and raining.

Sweet Jane…

While there’s no question that Jane Birkin is the ultimate muse for effortless chic, her sweet yet sultry style seems especially fresh this season with lace, crochet and florals everywhere we turn.

Check out some of the ways we plan on channeling the French gamine:

Inspiration Station: Lydia Deetz

lydia

Even into the dead heat of summer, we never stop looking to the eternally weird and wonderful stylings of Beetlejuice’s goth princess Lydia Deetz for sartorial inspiration.

Seriously, must…find…that…hat.

And here’s what we’ll be wearing along with it:

Who Wears Short Shorts?

After years of refusing to wear the dreadfully casual short, I officially surrendered a few months back after seeing the mass of insanely cool versions coming down the runway and streets.

Of course now I’m completely hooked, and plan on giving my closet full of dresses and skirts some rest this summer while I rock their bike/scooter/park friendly kid sister instead.

And though I totally plan on showing off my (blindingly pale) gams, Hanneli’s leather+lace-up look is kind of blowing my mind right now.

The question is, which look do you all plan on channeling??

Blogger We Adore: Tuuli of Fallie’s Scrapbook

biketrip7

Tuuli Jurgenson of Fallie’s Scrapbook is one of those people that makes you realize you weren’t nearly as cool as you thought you were when you were (barely) 13.

In addition to posting photos of her effortlessly cool outfits that would look just as perfect on 20-something PYTs in Brooklyn as a teenager in Estonia, she also shares eye-popping graphic illustrations of fashion-forward femmes that strike her fancy (Pixie Geldof, Alexa Chung and Lady Gaga to name a few).

So, naturally, we just had to ask what inspires the girl that inspires us:

Describe your style: Simple and girly, but at times still pretty boyish and layered.

Your 3 wardrobe staples: Pants (whether they be jeans, harems or shorts), oversized t-shirts and girly stuff like dresses & skirts.

Favorite fashion decade: The second half of the Sixties. I love Twiggy for both her boyish look and mini dresses.

What are you most excited to wear this season? Harem pants, because I always wear either skinnies or tights and it’s cool to wear something different.

You’d never be caught dead wearing: Fake Ugg boots. They’re not cute, pretty or even waterproof.

Band you can’t stop listening to: Twisted Sister. I’m actually not usually a big fan of this kind of music, but their song “School’s Out” sounds so great right now.

Your perfect Sunday: Wake up at 10 a.m. Have morning tea and sandwiches, then check my e-mail/Blogger/Tumblr/Facebook. Clean my room before going shopping with my friends, then have a picnic in the park. Go home and watch Ugly Betty. Take photos with my sister to post to lookbook.nu and Blogger. Then I’d maybe watch some TV and go to sleep.

One thing you couldn’t live without: My computer, because most of my life is on the internet…which isn’t very good actually. Oh, and food too.

Your 3 favorite NG pieces right now: The Black ‘n Blue Moto Jacket because it reminds me a little of Wang and I love the two-tone and zippers, the Brit Box Tee for the shape and Union Jack pattern and the leopard Jeffrey Campbell Mariel Wedge. I’m usually not a huge fan of leopard, but these shoes are just fierce and I think I’d actually mix them with the jacket and tee!

Check out her dream Doc Martens (that we’re desperately hoping turn into real Doc Martens):

Gimme

ellery1-copy

What more could you ask for in a fashion show?

Maybe an ominous smoke-filled runway with pyramids sprouting up from the floor? How about Bowie-esque glitter face paint and a plumed leather bodysuit? Done.

Aussie designer Ellery sure knows how to put on a hell of a show, from the theatrical set design to the most insanely perfect bellbottoms we’ve ever laid our eyes on.

A Walk On The Wild Side

Though we’re firm believers that cat prints never truly go out of style, leopard and cheetah prints are having a serious moment in the urban jungle and we couldn’t be more excited.

Whether you choose to make a serious statement in a spotted dress or jacket (bonus points for mixing prints!) or ease into the trend with leopard accessories, there’s no better time to go wild!

A few of our current obsessions:

We stumbled upon these amazing mixed media works from L.A. artist Charlie Rubin when surfing Trendland today.

After you’re finished saving all the Crayola-hued images to your desktop, marvel at the fact that you can actually buy (and afford!) a print here.

Don’t worry, you can thank us later.

Turns Out Clarissa Knew What She Was Talking About…

(Looks like we share some common interests…)

Like every self-respecting tween fashion freak in the ’90s, Clarissa was totally my childhood idol.

But I mean, who doesn’t want to be the girl with a knack for pulling off insane colorful print combos, video game programming and creatively terrorizing her little bro? Seriously…she even had a pet alligator (Elvis) that she kept in a kiddie pool in her room!

Oh god, I think I still want to be like Clarissa. I guess I’ll start with the prints and start searching for a friend with a ladder.
