Our Go-To Styling Secrets

One of the major perks of working at Nasty Gal is being constantly inspired by everyone’s style. So now that we’ve all mastered the sloppy tuck and established a worn-in tee with leopard skinnies as our unofficial uniform, we decided it was time to share some of our favorite styling tips.

Get Spiked With Vintage Virgin

I know it’s all about the floral crown for summer, but with fall coming up fast, it’s time to ditch the daisies for something a bit more dangerous. Whether you reach for a headband, harnesses or individual spikes, there are endless ways to toughen up your everyday look. Right now, I’m really digging the long braided ponytail, especially with a little black dress like the El Diablo Dress paired with the Tripoli Cutout Boots. If you want to tone down the heavy metal, go for the Knotted Up Dress and 8th Street Spike Combat Boots, perfect for day or night.
Trust me, you’ll have everyone you know screaming, “OMG, SPIKES!”

Neon Love

By now, everyone probably knows that we’re addicted to neon, but dresses are only the beginning. Some of the coolest artists around have put their spin on the ubiquitous neon sign, turning them into works of art that we’d love to hang on our walls. Whether it’s a sweet note, inspiring quote, or something totally NSFW, these light installations prove that everything looks better in neon.

Leonardo DiCaprio

When it comes to the topic of ’90s teen heartthrobs, there is no denying that our ultimate will forever be Leo. With bad boy good looks and legit acting chops, he totally stole our hearts in cult classics like This Boy’s Life, The Basketball Diaries, and Romeo + Juliet (seriously, can we talk about that underwater scene with Claire Danes?). Over a decade and a few Oscar nominations later, we still find ourselves swooning over his long blonde locks and, ugh, those lips. Leo, we’ll always love you…

We’re ready to pack our bags and head to Havana after coming across Steven Meisel’s steamy 1989 Vogue Italia editorial featuring one of our ultimate ’90s icons, Linda Evangelista. Filled with saturated sequins, golden accessories, and one tall (dark and handsome) dude, this spread embodies everything that makes summer so damn hot.

On Another Level

Our shoe buyer, Jacqueline, always justifies buying a new pair of shoes by saying that they’re wearable art, so we asked her to share the most avant-garde designs on her radar. Let’s just say, she didn’t disappoint. With everything from ponytails and peacock feathers to skulls and fangs, here are the heels that walk a teetering line between footwear and sculpture.

Romp Around

You know those days when you wake up and don’t feel like deciding what to wear? Well, rompers are pretty much the greatest thing ever. This one-piece wonder will get you out the door in ten minutes or less, regardless of whether you’re headed to Saturday brunch or your favorite dive. Even better, it won’t fly over your head on a windy day. That’s what we call a win-win.

Aline Weber

With platinum blonde locks, to-die-for cheekbones and a rock ‘n roll attitude, this Brazilian-born beauty has had us completely smitten for a while now. So far this year, she’s hit the catwalk for the likes of Chloe, Rodarte and Missoni, somehow finding time to strike a pose for French, Spanish, German and Japanese Vogue…to name a few. Not only can she transform from natural beauty to androgynous tomboy to total bombshell without breaking a sweat, she also played a student (and Bridgette Bardot’s doppelganger) in Tom Ford’s stunning directorial debut, A Single Man. There’s no doubt this model-of-the-moment is just getting started, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
