Friday, October 19, 2012 Behind The Scenes: Show Me Your Desktop

Probably one of the first things we look at every morning and before we go to bed late at night is some sort of screen. They’re the display case for all our inspirations, and much like figuring out someone’s astrological sign based on their personality, we were wondering: Does the girl match the screen? We asked around at Nasty Gal HQ and realized: Yes. Big time.

The only difference between Lemmy and GOD…. there is none. Some of the favorite songs you see on my playlist today include Dio, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Bob Seger, Hawkwind and, of course, Lemmy!!! You know, just some timeless classics. As for my inbox, I’ve really been making the most out of Halloween this year. I’ve been to the Blumhouse of Horrors (which ruled!!!), and Hollywood Horror Nights at Universal Studios made me jump out of my skin with their KILLER 3D psychedelic Alice Cooper Maze and Walking Dead-themed trail where zombies chased me down with chainsaws. There’s a haunted hay ride in Griffith Park which should be equally terrifying, and the banger of the bunch of course will be a special Halloween party at the end of this month. I’ve got a few costumes in mind.

My desktop is hyper organized! I have folders for all kinds of things, like woven blouses, denim washes, fabric inspiration, etc. I like to compile inspiration photos in there and revisit every few weeks so I can see where things can be used. The random folder is where all the silly stuff goes that I can’t justify putting in a folder called “denim.” This also includes pics of rainbow birthday cakes, old surfer dudes, funny 90s shoes and movie stills from Dazed and Confused.

How do I know when I see something I love? I drag and drop, baby… drag and drop to that desktop! I’m the reigning queen of the .jpg. I like to keep a few key randoms in a warm spot on my desktop for whenever my eyes need a jump-start or a break from endless emails. My most recent stash seems to be based on playful, funny, tough and strong themes, as well as overt sex. I like fashion, but I love it with a touch of the raw and real. Currently I’m obsessed with the work of 90s stylist Anna Cockburn, our upcoming shoot with Hugh Lippe, and figuring out how I can live more of my life in nothing but dirty sneakers and a bikini bottom.

Thursday, October 18, 2012 Nasty Guys: Ladies & Gentlemen, The Rolling Stones

As much as we debate the impossible question, “Mick or Keith?”, there’s no way we could ever choose our favorite Rolling Stone. In the ’60s, the bad boy Brits hit the scene and they’ve pretty much ruled the world since. The notorious frontmen have spanned the decades, basically writing the book on how to be rock & roll gods…partying with Warhol at Studio 54 and marrying supermodels like Jerry Hall, not to mention making some of the greatest rock records ever. Keith has the “I don’t give a shit” attitude we love and Mick’s lips (alright, and his moves) still have us swooning. This year marked their 50th anniversary and since they just seem to get better with age, they’re hitting the stage to celebrate with a few exclusive shows in the UK and US, alongside the release of a new documentary, Crossfire Hurricane. Essentially, The Stones are not only rock royalty but will forever be the kings of cool.

Thursday, October 18, 2012 Guest Edit: Leather or Not, Here I Come
Pleather, faux, vegan leather…whatever you’re wearing these days has come a long way since the 90s. It used to be somewhat taboo to be seen in fake leather since you could tell from a mile away that you’re wearing it. To quote Cher Horowitz, “From far away it’s okay, but up close it’s a big old mess.” Nowadays you can hardly spot the difference thanks to sleek, wearable pieces with amazing detailing. No more smelling like rubber or rocking something too stiff to bust a move. The “not-quite leathers” have stepped their game up, giving you tons of styles to choose from. You can wear a little, like this two tone Wine & Dine Maxi Dress with the perfect pop of faux in the middle or get a lot of crazy DIY inspiration from the vintage Moschino Passport Mini Skirt. Real or fake…who cares, it’s about looking good on a budget!
