Thursday, October 4, 2012 Artsy Fartsy: Neil Krug’s Pulp Non-Fiction

Devotees of the analog appreciate photographer Neil Krug because he gets his effects straight from the source: film, not a phone’s camera. His eye for warm, sun-drenched, psychedelic landscapes and portraiture have landed him work with bands like Justice, Devendra Banhart, My Chemical Romance, Ladytron, The Horrors, Scissor Sisters, Tame Impala, Gonjasufi, and he’s also released a passion project with his wife, model Joni Harbeck. Together they’ve compiled two volumes of gorgeous photography featuring fantasy scenarios, most of which involve her running free in the desert, say, or decadently decorated and lying on the floor. These books are exactly how you’d hope your sweetheart would see you—gorgeous, fierce, multi-faceted—as well as the way you’d want to see the world.

Wednesday, October 3, 2012 Studio Soundtracks: Playing Favorites with Ultrademon

Mid-week we’re kinda in the need of a serious pick-up and blast of the weird to get to Friday. Chicago DJ, producer and Coral Records founder Ultrademon is just the trick. He’s currently throwing bonkers parties called “MAINFRAME” with his sweetheart (a performer and DJ named Zombelle) and working on his first full-length record for a label we’re not allowed to mention – it’s big though, trust us. He took a break from the action to give us insight on a few of his favorite tracks right now.

 ”The Giver” by  Duke Dumont

The Twin Turbo record label puts out a lot of stuff I like, but this one kills the dance floor.

”You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby” by Fatboy Slim

I’ve recently been revisiting this entire album. It was a huge influence when I was playing GameCube

.

“B Squared” by Blue Angels

Niche bassline is always in my heart.

Tuesday, October 2, 2012 A Week With: Madison, Our Vintage-Obsessed Junior Copywriter

Vintage maxi dress and belt, Bracelet from a street vendor in Mexico

With a closet bursting with flea market treasures that range from dreamy bohemian maxis to vibrant vintage prints, our Junior Copywriter Madison never fails to make heads turn as she breezes through the office. Though she describes her style as “a bit schizo” depending her mood each morning, her eternal influences are Bianca Jagger, Uschi Obermaier, Joni Mitchell, and old photos of her mom from the ’80s in skin-tight metallic jeans, structured blazers, and armfuls of bangles. Here’s a glimpse of some of the pieces she can’t live without and her eclectic Echo Park pad.

“It was love at first sight when I spotted this dress at my favorite LA vintage shop, Squaresville. The ’70s housewife vibes make it perfect for hosting friends for brunch or a dinner party.”

Vintage Valentino leather top, Nasty Gal shorts, Vintage cuff

“I feel like I practically stole this Valentino top from Goodwill. Vintage lasercut leather with epic structured shoulders for $14.99? I mean…”

Vintage tee and cuff, Trimmed Tux Vest, Nasty Gal shorts, Avalos Platform Boot

“I’ve been throwing this tux vest on with pretty much everything lately. It adds a little polish without trying too hard.”

Vintage silk blouse and ring, Mara Hoffman Beaded Sequin Pants, Aldo heels

“I love these pants because the sequins and beading add some ’80s flair to the classic black trouser. They were born to go straight from the office to happy hour.”

“Bob Dylan is my everything.”

Nasty Gal maxi dress

“One of my forever favorite dresses is my very first Nasty Gal purchase from about three years ago. I love wearing all white, and any of my friends can tell you how I feel about maxis. This one is perfect for everything from thrifting to a house party.”

Nasty Gal jumpsuit, Vintage cuff

“Lately I’ve been into graphic black and white prints, which isn’t usually my speed but since I dyed my hair dark AND cut bangs, I’ve been feeling more adventurous. This jumpsuit is awesome because it has a high neckline (which I’m obsessed with for Fall) and it’s a cool option when you don’t feel like wearing a dress.”
