Friday, May 4, 2012 Nails: Rock Them Nails!
Meet Madeline Poole, the crafty genius behind the amazing nail art in our May lookbook. We sat down with her to talk about getting ready for our shoot, the recent nail art craze, and what she’d love to paint on Nicki Minaj’s nails.
So tell us, how did you prepare for our lookbook shoot?
I know how quick outfit changes are on a shoot, so I prepared fake nails beforehand. Each look can take 1 to 5 hours depending on the design. Some of the patterns were really challenging, as I wanted them to match the clothing perfectly. On the day of the shoot, I literally just had to stick them on the nails of the model and we were good to go.
How long do the nails last once you put them on?
If you really push hard and want to keep them for a while, they can last up to six days. I had some on the other day and wasn’t able to get them off at all!
Why aren’t your nails painted? Isn’t this a must for a nail artist?
Well I’m doing a lot of nails every day, and literally get my hands dirty for the sake of my clients. Fake nails are the perfect solution for me. I just put them on when I go out at night.
How did you get started as a nail artist?
I studied painting in art school, but it didn’t feel right. One day, I tried a design on my own nails and was instantly hooked. I just knew that I wanted to do nails in every shape and color! I mean, I’m still painting, it’s just not on canvas anymore.
What was your first design?
It was Hello Kitty (laughing).
What do you think started the recent nail art craze?
Girls like to add nail art to their outfits as another type of accessory. It’s a cool way of self-expression. The variations are endless, so I think we’ll see a lot more of it in the future.
What are your most popular designs?
Gradient, galaxy and outlines.
Who would you love to do a set of nails for?
OMG, there are so many. I’d love to do nails for Beyonce, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj or even Lady Gaga.
What would you do for Nicki?
Probably something crazy, like laser beams and glow-in-the-dark polish.
Any advice for girls who are having troubles choosing the right design?
I think it’s a good idea to match the colors with your skin tone. Also, if you haven’t experimented with a lot of nail art yet, choose simple patterns and consider the size and boldness of the design.
Any last words to our readers?
