Gabby Datau isn’t easy to label. The Los Angeles native is a freelance graphic designer by trade, but she spends her free time making all sorts of cool stuff: including clothing, collages, and music (her father is a musician and Datau has been in bands, from “shoegaze garage to surf rock to sludge/stoner metal to hardcore punk” since high school).. The 23 year old studied music in high school and art at prestigious college Cal Arts, where she studied graphic design.” When I was in school, I was mostly interested in typography, gender constructs, and music experiments,” Gabby says when asked about her art style. She’s currently working on design work out of a studio downtown with her best friend, and also making noise and electronic music on her own. We asked the brainy beauty a few questions about her work and inspirations.

Where would you ideally like to see your career go?

I’d like to travel everywhere and play music and get paid to do that. I’d love to write too; I think it’s very important to write. Hopefully, I’d like to start some kind of cross cultural supplement that could garner all of these experiences and start a  dialogue about music, art, and fashion. I’ve always wanted to be an editor.

How would you describe your personal style?

Generally minimal, utilitarian, and unisex.

Do you see any crossover between your art and your style?

Yeah, lack of colors.
