Here at Nasty Gal, we’re serious about the ultimate anti-prom aesthetic, and we couldn’t think of a better way to say “F you” to conventional school rules than by dyeing our hair the perfect shade of mint blue. We enlisted the help of hair stylist Ashlee Rose Clay to create the ultimate show-stopping (and temporary!) tousled strands perfect for prom, the after party and everything in between.
STEP 1: GET THOSE BEACHY WAVES & FIND YOUR PERFECT SHADE
You’re going to need to do all the styling before you apply the color because dry chalk + heat = burned hair. Ouch.
Start by taking a section of the hair and wrapping it around the barrel of a curling iron. Ashlee says, “Curling irons are kind of hard to use, so I really like the wands that have no handle. That can help. For the waves, alternate each direction you wrap the curl around your head, except the sections around your face–wrap away from your face!–to get that super beachy look.”
Then, it’s time to find your perfect shade. Ashlee says, “If you’re living in a brunette, darker hair world, you should to go into the pinks because that’s going to really pop on your hair. You need to stay away from the pastels. Neons are best for a darker hair color. If you have a blonde or mid-tone hair color, you have more free range to go into the pastel world.”
STEP 2: PART HAIR IN HALF
If you have super dark hair and want the color to be more vibrant, use dry shampoo all over your hair first. “You can also buy white chalk and that will help take out the darkness of your hair. That’s an advanced tip, but it can help you, especially if you want pink ends and you have really dark hair. If you’re blonde and you’re doing the pastel, I would just apply heavily to get that color,” Ashlee says.
STEP 3: START WITH THE BOTTOM HALF & APPLY CHALK FROM ROOT TO END
Pro tip from Ashlee: “When you’re doing your prom makeup, that should happen after because the chalk will fall onto your skin. Do your hair first and use a makeup wipe all around your forehead, the back of your neck, and your chest, just in case.”
STEP 4: APPLY CHALK TO THE TOP HALF FROM ROOT TO END
“After you apply the chalk, grab your hair with a towel and press it to take the extra powder out.”
STEP 5: APPLY SALT SPRAY FOR A TEXTURED LOOK
“I’m a really big fan of Brilliantine by Bumble and Bumble. It’s a really nice finishing product to give it that perfect texture.” And there you have it: blue hair, don’t careee.
