Wednesday, July 30, 2014 Trends: Boredom Bangs
There are two types of girls: the girls who trust only their hair stylist to touch their hair, and the girls who take their looks into their own hands. Okay, that is ridiculous—there’s actually like a million types of girls. But hair remains to be a contentious issue when it comes to vanity, whether it’s in aspiration of or taking ownership of one’s own vanity.
If you want something done right, do it yourself—makes sense right? And as much as we leave certain primping to the pros (anyone whose first introduction to a Brazilian is via DIY knows this), sometimes you get an itch in a moment of impulsive grandeur to do something semi-permanent to yourself… possibly involving scissors.
Thursday, July 17, 2014 Trends: Collar ID
The 90s were good for a lot of questionable things (like AOL and Hit Clips and 98 Degrees), but the decade also put out a few shining stars. Topping the list is the tattoo choker (along with jellies, Lip Smackers, and mood rings, of course). If you didn’t stack three or four chokers on your neck at all times, you were basically irrelevant. And don’t even get us started on the matching wrist and ring versions of the choker. If you had those, you were the queen. Upon research of tattoo chokers, though, we found a whole world of throat wear (can we call it that? is that gross?) from throughout the decades. Scroll through for some serious inspo and try not to choke up.
Thursday, June 26, 2014 Beauty: Summer Suitcase Essentials With MAKE Creative Director, Ariana Mouyiaris
Well hello there, new favorite make up line. MAKE might be one of the newest brands on the beauty block, but they’ve already nailed that elusive combination of high-quality products, on-trend colors, and super-cool packaging (v. essential). Also: It’s all paraben free, cruelty free, and never tested on animals. Oh, and did we mention that 10% of every sale goes towards the company’s We See Beauty foundation, especially set up to benefit women-led cooperative businesses? Yeah. Kinda awesome.
In honor of its Nasty Gal launch, we asked MAKE’s jetsetting Creative Director Ariana Mouyiaris to share the five suitcase essentials she can’t live without.

Monday, June 23, 2014 Trends: The Triumphant Return Of The Scrunchie
Few accessories have such a polarizing effect as the scrunchie. You remember scrunchies, right? They’re like normal hairbands, but swathed in fun fabric. According to the U.S Court of Appeals, a woman named Rommy Revson invented and patented the “scunci” in 1986; since then Rommy (could there be a better name for the originator of the scrunchie?) has seen her work ripped off every which way to Sunday, especially during the late 80s and the first half of the 90s, where scrunchies enjoyed a long run of high popularity. They popped up on everyone from Clarissa (of Explains It All fame) to Rayanne Graff to the cast of Mi Vida Loca, plus celebs like Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, and TLC were rocking the puffy hair holder. Our beloved scrunchie experienced a period of disgrace in the 2000s (who can forget the infamous “no Manhattan woman would wear a scrunchie” Sex and the City episode in 2003) but it seems like despite the obstacles of the past, they are returning with a vengeance. The accessory is popping up on the heads of it-girls, on runways, and even on world leaders like Hilary Clinton. Rommy Revson, your legacy lives on…
Friday, March 7, 2014 Trends: Blue Hair, Don’t Care
Here at Nasty Gal, we’re serious about the ultimate anti-prom aesthetic, and we couldn’t think of a better way to say “F you” to conventional school rules than by dyeing our hair the perfect shade of mint blue. We enlisted the help of hair stylist Ashlee Rose Clay to create the ultimate show-stopping (and temporary!) tousled strands perfect for prom, the after party and everything in between.
