BLEACHED

Sisters Jennifer and Jessie Clavin have been making music together since they were pre-teens, banging out their first notes on their dad’s acoustic guitar in their childhood San Fernando Valley home. The two spent high school playing in bands together, most notably Mika Miko, the most interestingly named Dead Banana Ladies, and later played in a few bands apart before they came together to form Bleached. The Clavins took their mutual love of the ’60s era girl-group sound and The Ramones and Misfits-style punk rock and put out a string of beloved 7-inches and music videos before finally releasing their first full length Ride Your Heart (which is now available, along with a ton of other records, on our site) last April.

Since then Bleached has toured the world, playing alongside the likes of Haim, Best Coast, and Black Lips. To celebrate the release of their newest 7-inch For The Feel, which drops today, we talked vinyl, aesthetics, and the importance of a good album cover.

White walls, T-shirts, and toys beware, Shantell Martin is armed with a marker and she doesn’t consider any surface too sacred. If you aren’t familiar with her work, Shantell’s drawings can best be described as a visual stream of consciousness, “a language of words and lines.” To us, her illustrations, done mostly in black and white and spanning across large walls or covering found objects, are nothing short of stunning. We caught up with Shantell to talk grandma collabs, drawing where you shouldn’t, and why she kind of needs a spare pool right now. — Chris Rellas

For the first installation of our new monthly horoscopes by SF-based astrologer Jessica Lanyadoo, she forecasts what’s in-store for the next 30 days with a badass reading and accompanies them with your sign’s power animal (in emoji-form) and your very own power ballad (courtesy of Prince).

Wednesday, August 27, 2014 Studio Soundtracks: Nasty Gal’s FYF Podcast with Joyce Manor, Mac DeMarco, and More

Yasi-Alanna-Gruesome

FYF was hot and crowded and hectic and loud—thus the perfect place to test drive my new podcast! Armed with my extensive knowledge of podcasts (AKA listening to “WTF with Marc Maron”) and thorough band research (Google on my iPhone), I hit the pavement at the fest and grabbed some of my favorite acts including Joyce Manor, Mac DeMarco, Jessy Lanza, and Alanna Gruesome of Joanna Gruesome, to have a chat with them about how their music was going, their festival highlights, and the situation in the Middle East (just kidding). Miss Steaktooth joined me for a few of the interviews, and together I’m pretty sure we managed to make every single interviewee uncomfortable. Yay!

Listen below to enjoy my prepubescent boy voice and charming nervous laugh. – Yasi Salek
