Friday, December 7, 2012 Artsy Fartsy: Painting The Town at Art Basel
Being the art and fashion fiends that we are, some of the Nasty Gal fam packed up and headed to Miami Beach for four days of the surreal life at Art Basel. It’s been a crazy whirlwind of adventures, from bumping into friends (Kesh, Pharrell, Terry, A$AP Rocky) to meeting the most amazing Nasty Gal superfans. In short…we came, we saw, we danced…and danced…and maybe had too much sugar-free Red Bull. But hey, what else are you supposed to do in Miami?
Friday, November 9, 2012 Artsy Fartsy: Mutual Core
We’re freaking out a little about this teaser of Björk’s new video… and lucky for us (and everyone else in Los Angeles) we get to see it first, even before the internet. This Monday, MOCA’s hosting an exclusive screening of “Mutual Core” on Grand Avenue from 11 AM to 5 PM. We’ve heard it’s more of a short film than music video, with a lot of volcanic imagery and the trademark Björk intensity we love so much. And since it’s directed by local artist/filmmaker/hacker Andrew Huang, we know it’s going to be out of control. Best thing is, the event is free to everyone, and it screens every 15 minutes, so there’s plenty chance to go. We’re heading over on a Nasty Gal field trip together, so we hope to see you there–we’ll let you know when on Monday… join us!
PS: In case you miss it (or can’t make it), “Mutual Core” will debut on MOCAtv afterwards; if you subscribe to the channel now, you get a free three-month membership to the museum.
Thursday, October 4, 2012 Artsy Fartsy: Neil Krug’s Pulp Non-Fiction
Devotees of the analog appreciate photographer Neil Krug because he gets his effects straight from the source: film, not a phone’s camera. His eye for warm, sun-drenched, psychedelic landscapes and portraiture have landed him work with bands like Justice, Devendra Banhart, My Chemical Romance, Ladytron, The Horrors, Scissor Sisters, Tame Impala, Gonjasufi, and he’s also released a passion project with his wife, model Joni Harbeck. Together they’ve compiled two volumes of gorgeous photography featuring fantasy scenarios, most of which involve her running free in the desert, say, or decadently decorated and lying on the floor. These books are exactly how you’d hope your sweetheart would see you—gorgeous, fierce, multi-faceted—as well as the way you’d want to see the world.
Wednesday, September 19, 2012 Artsy Fartsy: Tony Viramontes
In the first issue of SUPER NASTY we pronounced our love for fashion illustrator Tony Viramontes, who retrained the audience’s eye to appreciate the things we usually take for granted in design: the line down a back instead of the ruffles on a sleeve, say, or the perfection of light glinting off a curling tendril of hair. In his 33 years before he died in 1988, he never went for the obvious, drawing at drastic angles, and highlighting the strength in women and the sensuousness in men. He noted how couture and pop each influenced the other, and so worked with the best of both worlds in clientele, including the likes of Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Versace, Paloma Picasso, Duran Duran, Donna Summer, and Janet Jackson. With electric lines and smoldering smudges, his work implied motion, fast-paced and edgy, a sort of high energy meets dark lounge mystery in iconic contrast.
Thursday, September 6, 2012 Artsy Fartsy: Bella’s Watercolor Wonderland
We first caught a glimpse of Bella Harris‘s illustrations through a prism on Tumblr and immediately reblogged, so you can imagine how stoked we were to find out that it was inspired by Nasty Gal. Until two years ago, the self-taught artist hadn’t picked up a paintbrush since realizing turpentine wasn’t her grandmother’s Chanel N°5 as a kid. Since then, her work has been featured by the likes of Nylon and Elle Spain and is currently working on an amazing series of watercolors inspired by fashion bloggers. Her next goal? “I’m still hoping to have an illustration grace one of Jeffrey Campbell’s coveted shoe boxes.” Jeffrey, are you listening?
