Chromeo and I go wayyy back. Let’s just say I made a YouTube video of myself dancing in ’80s pumps to their song “Needy Girl” back in 2007 and (very proudly) posted it to my LiveJournal. Yeah, it was that long ago. (Don’t bother Googling it, people. That shiz is on lockdown.) As it turns out, Dave 1 and P-Thugg stopped by the Fonda Theatre right here in L.A. to play a show before they headed off to the desert, and I got to chat ‘em up about all the latest haps—their upcoming album White Women, festival fashion, and their love for JNCOs. (Seriously.) Check it out below. —Chrissy Mahlmeister

Wednesday, March 26, 2014 Studio Soundtracks: Krewella

krewella

Whether you’ve realized it or not, you’ve heard of Krewella. Turn on any top 40 radio station, and there’s a (very, very) large chance you’ll hear their impossible-to-forget single “Alive” from their debut album Get Wet. The L.A-via-Chicago EDM trio features singer/songwriter sisters Jahan and Yasmine Yousaf and DJ/producer Kris “Rain Man” Trindl. Not only did their first record release reach number 8 on the U.S. Billboard charts, but they’re also headlining Ultra Music Festival, and Lollapalooza this summer. Whew! So, we caught up with the girls right here in L.A. to talk all-things festival, and let them take some Nasty Gal Collection Spring 2014 pieces for a spin.

In case you were wondering, yes, you can make a living as a DJ. See: Jasmine Solano. This Brooklyn girl/MTV Iggy host started spinning on the radio at just 17, and her tireless work ethic has landed her gigs all over the world. (She’ll be at Glastonbury in June!) So, we hit her up to find out the secret to her success and create a killer playlist just for us. (We hope you have good headphones.)

Friday, March 21, 2014 Studio Soundtracks: Soko

P1230919

We can’t stop thinking about the killer Nasty Gal x Galore Mag bash from a couple weeks back—mostly because some of our favorite female musicians made an appearance (like Deap Vally and Ivy Levan!). But, we didn’t get a chance to talk to our DJ-of-the-night Soko because, well, she was a little busy. So, we caught up with the singer/actress/all-around babetron afterward to chat about her ’80s-inspired setlist, her never-ending “teen crisis”, and how she (successfully!) manages to live her entire life out of suitcase. Spoiler alert: She’s awesome.

Friday, March 14, 2014 Studio Soundtracks: Deap Vally

deap-vally-1

There’s really only one word to describe Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards of Deap Vally: badass. You wouldn’t think this noisey rock ‘n’ roll duo met in a Silver Lake needlework class just a few years ago–they’ve already played every major music festival (see: Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, and Leeds) and opened for Muse. Before these Cali girls headed back on the road, they get decked out in Nasty Gal at their rehearsal space in LA and gave us the low-down on what really happens at all those summer festivals.
