Oyster x Nasty Gal: From Where You’d Rather Be

_MV_5310_crop

Because we just launched our site in Australia (and because Aussie models Zoe Cross, Rachel Rutt, and Valentina Sykes are a few sartorial steps ahead of the rest of us), we asked our friends at Oyster to teach us about style down under. What photographer Rene Vaile and stylist Megha Kapoor created were affirmations of the Aussie stereotypes we all dream of: clear skies, scenic views of the Sydney Opera House, and girls who don’t play by the rules. Of course, we never knew Sydney was home to so many neon signs, but that was a nice touch.

Beach Reads

If you’re anything like me, you probably fantasize about the idea of having several unbroken, uninterrupted hours to fully immerse yourself in a book, especially if those hours can be spent on a big cozy blanket in the sand while you listen to the waves break on the shore. (You also probably regularly eat your body weight in French fries and are the only person left in the free world who still watches Grey’s Anatomy, so let’s hope you’re not THAT much like me). For whenever you get the opportunity to escape into a book this summer, even if it’s just in a bikini in your own backyard, we asked some of our favorite brainy babes for their reading recommendations. As for me, since there is no print adaptation of Grey’s Season 3, I’d suggest The Razor’s Edge by W. Somerset Maugham, which has a wanderlust-type thing going on, but also enough deep existentialism to soothe your inner summer goth.

Pharrell’s Backup Dancers

2014 Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival - Weekend 1 - Day 2

While hangin’ in the Cali desert all weekend long, we got down at some killer shows, but—if we’re going to be real for a sec—one of our favorite live performances had to be Pharrell. Not only did he bring his A-game onstage (and a surprise visit from Busta Rhymes!), but all his back-up singers and dancers were decked out in tons of Nasty Gal pieces. Rhea Dummett, Ashley Simpson, Khadija Nicholas, Christina Chandler, Ai Shimatsu, Mette Towley, Aye Hasegawa and Brya Underwood wore super graphic, ’90s-inspired ensembles that were totally fest and stage ready. Check out how they styled their looks (and swipe ’em up for yourself) below!

As we dive deeper into festival season, we want to talk about all-things rave! Each day this week, contributor Nicky Ottav will hit up a member of L.A.-based fashion collective/cyber cool kids club The Fabulous Stains and ask ‘em to dish on their best fest tips.

I love Luna to death, so I caught up with her to ask all about her festival fashion! —N.O.

Natalie Glover

You might’ve been slightly, OK, majorly tipped off to the fact that we’re celebrating all-things club kid this week, so we thought it would be the perfect time to hit up dancer/badass babe Natalie Glover. This 19-year-old Londoner is not only M.I.A.’s backup dancer, but an actress, model, choreographer and designer. Basically, you’re going to want to remember her name. We met up with Natalie and got her decked-out in some seriously awesome Nasty Gal pieces in her hometown. Check out what went down below!

I caught up again with her again—but this time to talk about all things festival fashion. —N.O.
