HERO

It’s easy to forget how dumb and gross it is living in the city when summer rolls around and nobody’s wearing pants, let alone ample butt coverage (being that this year, the hemlines are rising well above cleavage crescent in the jorts realm). Skin is a beautiful thing, especially when you get to paint it all fancy and show it off.

In possibly the first time for me that a beauty look has been inspired by a Discovery Channel documentary on Netflix, I’m taking a feather (or petal?) from our winged brethren, the bird of paradise. Funny how it’s generally the males in nature who get all the pretty colors to dance-hop around and woo their future baby-mamas. Not to delve into cross-dressing here, I see no problem following suit with these harbingers of tropical paradisco. Here’s a look inspired by the flower or the animal—you pick.

BEAUTY-1smaller copy

It’s taken us decades to master the art of applying black eyeliner ever so carefully along the eyelid (pro tip: bad idea to do this while driving). So you can imagine our panic when we noticed that neon under-eyeliner was becoming a thing. To find out how to rock those under-eye brights without going full-blown Bowie lighting bolts, we called Gloria Noto, our go-to makeup guru, for reinforcement. Get beauty-schooled.

Wednesday, June 25, 2014 Lessons From The Pros: Just Dew It

intro

Whether it’s after a morning run or a day at the beach, there’s something undeniably sexy about a little bit of sweat. And now that summer is officially here, it’s kind of hard to avoid. Of course, it’s a lot sexier to create the just-jogged-in look with moisturizer, foundation, and a little bit of lipstick. We had Work Mag EIC (and palm tattoo aficionado), Gloria Noto, teach us how to achieve the ideal level of dewy perfection, no perspiration added.

We know basics can be, well, basic, but we found three L.A. stylists who proved they can be anything but. Ashley Charbonneau, Djuna Bel, and Ashley Glorioso let us into their West Coast digs and showed us how to mix Nasty Gal pieces into their own (super stellar) wardrobe.

Friday, February 21, 2014 Lessons From The Pros: The Best Festival Hair With Lou Teasdale

lou-teasdale

Not everyone can call themselves a “rock ‘n’ roll groomer,” but London-based beauty expert Lou Teasdale totally fits the bill. She kicked off her career as a hair assistant on The X Factor back in 2007, and today she styles the now-infamous boy band coifs of One Direction. An avid festival-goer herself, we thought she’d be the perfect person to gives us some insight on how to style our strands without a lot of product, tools, and, um, shower time. (Not to mention she’s releasing a “creative bible” on DIY hair and beauty called The Craft come April!) Here, Lou shows us how to conquer a 3-day sweatfest in style and—remember, ladies—“baby wipes and dry shampoo are your friends.”
