Thursday, June 19, 2014 Bringin’ It Back: Bandits in Bandeaus

popcover2

There really should be a fan club that celebrates what Richard Prince and Abbey Lee created for Pop in 2010. If there isn’t, then I will make one and text all of you about it. It’s been four years since the editorial came out, but the leather-loaded images still make me want to ride a bike or buy a gun holster or both. Lucky for all of us, we just rounded up enough Western wear to last us until the cows come home.

Wednesday, June 11, 2014 Role Model: #GIRLBOSS: KIM GORDON

Let me be very clear that I live in a world where Kim Gordon needs no introduction, but for the 1% of you who were either born after 2005 or spent the entirety of the last 20 years camping in the bush in Western Australia, here is some background. (For the rest of you currently staring at your “I love Kim G” hand-collaged bedroom walls, my apologies). Born in Rochester, NY and bred in Los Angeles, CA, Gordon studied visual art at Otis before moving to New York City and becoming immersed in the underground/post-punk/noise music scene. It was there that she met Thurston Moore and Lee Ronaldo, and together they formed legendary no-wave band Sonic Youth in 1981. As guitarist, bassist, and vocalist for Sonic Youth, Gordon spent a few decades serving as the #1 girl crush of all the coolest girls in the world, someone how finding time in her busy shredding schedule to produce Hole’s first album Pretty On The Inside, co-direct The Breeders “Cannonball” video with pal Spike Jonze, and launch a (now defunct) cult clothing line called X-Girl (a favorite of the likes of Chloe Sevigny and Sofia Coppola), all the while continuing to create art in myriad forms.

Her latest endeavor is sort of the ideal marriage of music and art, an experimental noise band heavy on improvisation and deliberate visuals called Body/Head. At age 61, Kim Gordon is still a style icon and girl crush to the masses, and she is still creating her own world and playing by her own rules. She will always be a #GIRLBOSS in our books.

HAYLEY-MAGNUS

By all conventional wisdom, actress Hayley Magnus should not have turned out normal. Despite having caught the acting bug at a very young age (“I think I came out of the womb mid-pose!”) the twenty five year old Australian beauty grew up telling the other kids she wanted to be a volcanologist, just to set herself apart (partly due to a few too many Dante’s Peak viewings). Her first real performance was as a pre-teen, as part of something they have down under called Tournament of the Minds, which is some weird hybrid of drama club and debate team they have in school (IDEK). She played a hillbilly who could only speak in rhyming couplets, and had to answer social science questions about the universal time code (no, for real). “It was the nerdiest of nerd things ever!” She insists she had friends and everything, (“do imaginary ones count?”) and after high school landed her first real gig, on popular Australian soap opera Home and Away. From there the quirky, brainy beauty landed a recurring role on a show called Slide, followed by several movie roles, eventually moving to Los Angeles last year. If you think moving to Hollywood has changed her, don’t: her favorite part about living here? “The opossums! They’re hilarious!”

Since Hayley did us the kindness of appearing in our Summer Garden Party editorial, I asked her to plan her perfect garden party. And guess what? It’s weird and charming, just like her:

Monday, June 9, 2014 Right Now: Ball So Hard

Shot_07_009

The World Cup kicks off on June 12th in Brazil! That exclamation point (much like many of my exclamation points, to be honest) is feigned, because in regards to soccer, I know about as much as British people know about nachos (in case you were wondering what that means, last time I ate nachos in London, they came topped with BBQ sauce). But I digress: soccer (or football, as the rest of the free world calls it) is cool for many reasons: during World Cup, you have an excuse to go to a bar at 10am, David Beckham, and of course, soccer-related fashion. We rounded up some of our favorite examples of the latter, drawing from the Nasty Gal vintage archives, a Victoria’s Secret fashion show, Carine Roitfeld’s Instagram, and more:
