Friday, November 9, 2012 A Week With: Linda, Changing The World One Sample At A Time

Left: Hand-Knitted Scarf, Pixie Sequin Top, Right: Truncate Crop Knit, Vintage Levi’s

Our adorable Studio Production Assistant, Linda Park, is a gal who does not take her style too seriously, the only component she considers essential are her deep, red lips. “I like to have a sense of humor with my style. I’ll wear a LBD with Nike running shoes.” It only makes sense that when we see Linda, it’s often just her shiny, black hair whipping by as she sprints into the office with a packed rolling rack full of treasures trailing behind her. Let’s take a tour of this sun-kissed beauty’s childhood home as we chill with her folks, and go for a skate sesh around the neighborhood.

“I keep my decor and makeup routine simple; Nars lipstick on my dresser, and photos I’ve taken of wildflowers on my wall.”

“These cat ears are too cute not to borrow from the studio! Unfortunately, they don’t launch on the site until the holidays…” (We’ll be waiting eagerly…)

Rodarte sweatshirt, Disco Fever Dress (coming soon!), Superga sneakers

“I want to learn how to skate because all my guy friends keep telling me I’m going to fall.”

“My dad is the coolest guy I know. He came to the U.S. to make surfboards in the 70′s. Now he’s into photography and I’m learning so much from him. My mom? Well, she was already GROWING kale before it was cool to eat it.”

“I started knitting when I studied abroad in Paris. It was something to remind me of my grandmother who had passed before she could teach me. Luckily, I picked it up with the aid of YouTube.”

Rachel Comey Coat, Vintage Jeans, Vintage Tee

“I’m most inspired by designers whose brands encompass more than just fashion. It’s a lifestyle, like Nasty Gal.”

Tuesday, October 2, 2012 A Week With: Madison, Our Vintage-Obsessed Junior Copywriter

Vintage maxi dress and belt, Bracelet from a street vendor in Mexico

With a closet bursting with flea market treasures that range from dreamy bohemian maxis to vibrant vintage prints, our Junior Copywriter Madison never fails to make heads turn as she breezes through the office. Though she describes her style as “a bit schizo” depending her mood each morning, her eternal influences are Bianca Jagger, Uschi Obermaier, Joni Mitchell, and old photos of her mom from the ’80s in skin-tight metallic jeans, structured blazers, and armfuls of bangles. Here’s a glimpse of some of the pieces she can’t live without and her eclectic Echo Park pad.

“It was love at first sight when I spotted this dress at my favorite LA vintage shop, Squaresville. The ’70s housewife vibes make it perfect for hosting friends for brunch or a dinner party.”

Vintage Valentino leather top, Nasty Gal shorts, Vintage cuff

“I feel like I practically stole this Valentino top from Goodwill. Vintage lasercut leather with epic structured shoulders for $14.99? I mean…”

Vintage tee and cuff, Trimmed Tux Vest, Nasty Gal shorts, Avalos Platform Boot

“I’ve been throwing this tux vest on with pretty much everything lately. It adds a little polish without trying too hard.”

Vintage silk blouse and ring, Mara Hoffman Beaded Sequin Pants, Aldo heels

“I love these pants because the sequins and beading add some ’80s flair to the classic black trouser. They were born to go straight from the office to happy hour.”

“Bob Dylan is my everything.”

Nasty Gal maxi dress

“One of my forever favorite dresses is my very first Nasty Gal purchase from about three years ago. I love wearing all white, and any of my friends can tell you how I feel about maxis. This one is perfect for everything from thrifting to a house party.”

Nasty Gal jumpsuit, Vintage cuff

“Lately I’ve been into graphic black and white prints, which isn’t usually my speed but since I dyed my hair dark AND cut bangs, I’ve been feeling more adventurous. This jumpsuit is awesome because it has a high neckline (which I’m obsessed with for Fall) and it’s a cool option when you don’t feel like wearing a dress.”

Friday, August 31, 2012 A Week With: Dee, Design Darling and Head Banger

Fuse Shag Jacket, Crawford Dress, Cut It Out Collar Necklace

You may already know Dee from her Chit Chat session or remember her as one of our very first models. Now she’s an integral part of our design team, constantly sketching, cutting and creating the Nasty Gal collection. Inspired by everything from minimalism to heavy metal, Dee’s style is a force to be reckoned with and she just so happens to be one of the coolest girls we know. Take a trip into her closet and the moody lair the bleach blonde babe calls home.

“This is my favorite jacket from our collection. It adds a loud pop of color to a smoldering black dress…or anything really.”

“This is one of my coolest vintage finds ever from one of the world’s greatest designers. It says ‘Music Keeps You Under Control’, and I’m pretty sure Vivienne Westwood made it specifically for me.”

Vintage Vivienne Westwood tee, The Kink High-Rise Jean

“Music has always been a huge inspiration for my personal style and decor. A rock tee and jeans is my go-to uniform.”

Madrid Wool Hat, Crawford Dress, Vintage Chloe maxi dress & Robert Clergerie wedges

“Lately, I’ve been into more of a minimal aesthetic. I’m surrounded by swatches of bold prints and colors every day, so it feels like a clean slate.”

Vintage jumper, hat and belt, LD Tuttle boots

“I think there should be a statement piece in every outfit you wear. In this case, it’s my ex-boyfriend’s tooth ring.”

“Music and film culture are the biggest influences in my personal and design aesthetic. Motorhead and Black Sabbath are my all-time favorite bands, so everything definitely skews to the dark side.”

Nasty Gal blouse (coming soon), The Kink High-Rise Jean, Alexander Wang boots

“This is my take on the Canadian tux. I’d toss it on to go to the flea market or for a ride on the back of a Harley with a leather jacket.”

Left: Reboot Moto Jacket, vintage top, Miu Miu skirt, LD Tuttle boots, Right: Harness Moto Top, Varsity Moto Skirt

“This colorblock moto is one of the pieces I designed for Weird Science. I wanted something that would seamlessly fit into any wardrobe, but still has an unexpected element. I love the contrast of soft pastels with tough black leather.”

“I’m really into the novelty of all things dark and witchy. It all goes back to music since I grew up on heavy metal. All of these were gifts from my friends, which makes them even more special to me.”

Friday, July 6, 2012 A Week With: Houman, The Guy We Want To Trade Closets With

Left: Ann Demeulemeester hat, Alexander Wang knit, COS leather pants; Right: Vintage tank, Yohji Yamamoto pants, Marni sandals, Blackout Circle Shades

It’s impossible not to stop and smile when we spot our glamorous Sample Coordinator running around the office in high-waist leather skinnies, stopping to chat with everyone he passes along the way. Houman’s minimal-meets-maximal style is a force to be reckoned with, and is endlessly inspiring to all the girls and guys at Nasty Gal HQ. Though he may look like the striking love child of Salvador Dali and Diana Vreeland, he’s most influenced by “the sleek, tailored look of the mod era, combined with the experimental looks and shapes of the ’80s and the simple, loose cuts of the early ’90s.” In short, prepare to be wowed.

Thursday, June 21, 2012 A Week With: Nicki – Sit Front Row With The First Face We See Every Morning!

Harness Dress, Spike Platform Boot, Earrings from Melrose Trading Post, Revlon Matte Lipstick in Really Red

Meet Nicki, the gorgeous girl that greets everyone who walks through the doors of Nasty Gal HQ. Outside of the office, she can usually be found documenting her goth-meets-’90s rock style on her blog, Tropic Of Unicorn. Influenced most by music and culture, she says, “I would love to look like a girl who could be in a Wong Kar Wai film. In my opinion, the sexiest girl would be all the bitchin’, hilarious aspects of Marla Singer from Fight Club and the sweet, coy, vulnerable aspects of Kim from Edward Scissorhands. I love the dark aesthetic, but I have a really positive outlook on things. My mantra: Everything always happens for the best, though you might not realize it at the time.”
