Wednesday, February 6, 2013 Behind The Scenes: Meet Our New VP Of Design, Sarah!
Our new VP of Design, Sarah Wilkinson, has all kinds of tricks up her sleeve. She recently moved here from London to figure out what’s next for Nasty Gal’s label. Find out more about the styles she’s most excited about and the stuff every gal should have in her closet…
Want to tell us about the difference between LA style and London style?
There are many similarities, as fashion trends are becoming more global due to fashion blogs. For me, LA style is relaxed, yet effortlessly polished. The contemporary mood is complimented with a body-confident attitude. London style is more eclectic and layered with nostalgic references and an eccentric prowess seen as mismatched and quirky.
What do you listen to while you design?
I love music. At the moment I’m listening to Minus the Bear, Walk the Moon, and Craft Spells. I listen to music that reminds me of growing up—The Cure and Cocteau Twins are constant favorites.
How would your best friend describe your style?
She would say I have a “certain unique style” that is constantly changing. She laughed and looked in my wardrobe and said, “You have way too many clothes. Do you wear anything twice?” And I do like to repeat outfits.
What was your dream job as a kid?
I wanted to be a fine artist, and then later, when I got a little older, a theater set designer. I’ve always been inspired by art, sculpture, and theater.
What’re you envisioning in your designs for Nasty Gal?
Brilliant things. An evolution of fierce, ground-breaking style. An edit of the most desirable clothing imaginable.
Want to tell us about any upcoming trends?
I am working on Fall 2013, which is my ultimate season: deep rich tones of color, layered sweaters and outerwear, thigh high boots, leather/waxed finishes against transparencies.
What should every girl have in her closet?
An array of black dresses for every eventuality, and a selection of white tee shirts in every shape and size.A black leather jacket, every girl needs at least one. Matching sets of lingerie with French lace, but those stay folded in a drawer so they may not count!

What happens at Nasty Gal HQ…usually ends up on Instagram. Here’s a glimpse of what goes down behind the glitter curtain.
Tuesday, November 6, 2012 Behind The Scenes: Show Me Your Desktop Part 2
Ever since our first desktop experiment, we can’t stop sneaking peeks at screens when walking through Nasty Gal HQ. Luckily, our stalking paid off as we found about a gazillion cool photos, sweet jams and Nasty Gal totes that were too good to keep to ourselves.
Saga, Merchandise Assistant
My desktop is highly organized in folders from sales reports to inspiration photos and everything in between. My desktop photo is my favorite pic of Kate Moss looking like a badass babe. It’s kind of the inspiration photo for my closest group of girlfriends. (BTP–bitches that party) I always have music on at work and generally start my day with the XX or Van Morrison. As for my Nasty Gal tote, I always have a ton of stuff waiting in there for me…it’s too hard not to!
Liz, Vintage Buyer
I think I have about 2000 inspiration photos saved on my computer – everything from glitter makeup to 80s print ads to vintage pieces I’m on the hunt for. Right now I’ve got my sports vibe on: lots of sweaty Nike crop tops and skateboard graphics that definitely inspired the vintage we used in the November Lookbook. And then, of course, there’s the inescapable eBay window that is always up on my computer. I probably spend about, um, 20-24 hours a week on eBay. Ok not really, but maybe! It is both the best and worst thing in the world. There’s a point where your brain starts turning to mush and every listing looks the same when you’re on page 38 of 128 and you swear you’ve seen that shirt a million times, and then – BOOM – you’ve found that amazing Chanel dress and it is $29.99 Buy It Now. That’s when the competitive side of me comes out and I silently cheer myself at my desk and grab some Oreos as a reward.
I’m getting ready for the holiday season with this awesome photo I found of Anjelica Huston in a silver wig sippin’ on some champagne! My desktop is full of random blog images, Excel sheets, and music from my Spotify. Part of being a Merchandiser is getting to find new and inspirational images to work off for product development, but I also stumble across other cool shit that just makes me smile. Shuffling through my music library keeps me going through the day. I’ve been feeling a lot of the old stuff like The Talking Heads, but also new stuff with an old sound like Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti.
Thursday, November 1, 2012 Behind The Scenes: Nasty Ghoul Halloween Party!
You know that moment when you’re in the midst of getting ready for Halloween and look in the mirror at yourself and start laughing—that’s your clue that you’re doing your costume right. Last night we threw an all-out Nasty Ghoul bash with IAMSOUND, full of mimes, dolls, skulls, tropical babes, a paper towel icon, flowers, Barbarella, cheerleaders, magicians, animals, a full-on flasher, and plenty of who-knows-whats—all of whom did it up to the fullest. Our fearless leader Sophia, who came as the eerie Miss Argentina from Beetlejuice, led a panel of judges for a rowdy (and racy) dance contest fueled by Bushmills and PBR…. Los Angeles glam romancers Fatal Jamz rocked the stage in sequins for a live set including a heartfelt cover of Madonna’s “Dress You Up”…. And we all had so much fun getting caught up in the cobwebs strung all over the place. Check this video of the party made just for us by Abigail Bean, plus photos by Tommy B and our own Devyn Galindo, to see what happens on the dark side!
Friday, October 19, 2012 Behind The Scenes: Show Me Your Desktop
Probably one of the first things we look at every morning and before we go to bed late at night is some sort of screen. They’re the display case for all our inspirations, and much like figuring out someone’s astrological sign based on their personality, we were wondering: Does the girl match the screen? We asked around at Nasty Gal HQ and realized: Yes. Big time.
Dee, Design Assistant
The only difference between Lemmy and GOD…. there is none. Some of the favorite songs you see on my playlist today include Dio, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Bob Seger, Hawkwind and, of course, Lemmy!!! You know, just some timeless classics. As for my inbox, I’ve really been making the most out of Halloween this year. I’ve been to the Blumhouse of Horrors (which ruled!!!), and Hollywood Horror Nights at Universal Studios made me jump out of my skin with their KILLER 3D psychedelic Alice Cooper Maze and Walking Dead-themed trail where zombies chased me down with chainsaws. There’s a haunted hay ride in Griffith Park which should be equally terrifying, and the banger of the bunch of course will be a special Halloween party at the end of this month. I’ve got a few costumes in mind.
My desktop is hyper organized! I have folders for all kinds of things, like woven blouses, denim washes, fabric inspiration, etc. I like to compile inspiration photos in there and revisit every few weeks so I can see where things can be used. The random folder is where all the silly stuff goes that I can’t justify putting in a folder called “denim.” This also includes pics of rainbow birthday cakes, old surfer dudes, funny 90s shoes and movie stills from Dazed and Confused.
Joanna, Creative Director
How do I know when I see something I love? I drag and drop, baby… drag and drop to that desktop! I’m the reigning queen of the .jpg. I like to keep a few key randoms in a warm spot on my desktop for whenever my eyes need a jump-start or a break from endless emails. My most recent stash seems to be based on playful, funny, tough and strong themes, as well as overt sex. I like fashion, but I love it with a touch of the raw and real. Currently I’m obsessed with the work of 90s stylist Anna Cockburn, our upcoming shoot with Hugh Lippe, and figuring out how I can live more of my life in nothing but dirty sneakers and a bikini bottom.
