Thursday, December 27, 2012 Sophia’s Corner: Flashback—2012′s Wild Ride
We Hired More Than 100 People!
We launched a for-real collection! Everything we make is designed in our Los Angeles offices with love and laughter. We’ve only just begun, so get ready for even more amazing collections coming your way in 2013.
We also launched SUPER NASTY, our biannual magazine dedicated to fashion, art, photography and culture. We’re hangin’ with you on your nightstands and next to the toilet. What? It’s OK to be intimate.
Elle magazine’s Maggie Bullock wrote a fantastic piece on the brand, featuring images from our lookbooks earlier this year with models Hyoni Kang and Hannah Holman.
Founder Sophia Amoruso (that’s me) was featured on the cover of Entrepreneur magazine’s January 2013 issue. I know, it doesn’t count as “this year” but it’s on newsstands now, so close enough, right?
We Moved Eastward
We relocated our fulfillment operations into 500,000 square feet of space in Louisville, Kentucky. It’s a huge, open expanse waiting to be filled with wild dreams and even wilder clothes. Being centrally located in Kentucky means that we can get you your cute shit faster no matter where you are in the US!
Tuesday, September 11, 2012 Sophia’s Corner: NGFW on MTV Style
When our spaceship landed on the Westway’s dance floor in NYC last weekend, MTV Style jumped in on the party with us. Swept up in the madness and the glory, I realized that the pace in music I like is the same as what I love about fashion—an attitude that elevates confidence but doesn’t take itself too seriously, and just wants to have a blast non-stop. I talked to MTV Style about it, surrounded by co-conspirators in celebration of Nasty Gal’s very first collection… and spilled the details on my favorite piece. What’s yours?
Monday, August 27, 2012 Sophia’s Corner: The Future Is Now
Today marks the beginning of a new era at Nasty Gal. Until today, Nasty Gal has been a place that we’ve curated things that already existed. Now, for the first time, we’re creating things. For the past year, we’ve been searching for inspiration, sketching and ultimately designing our very first collection – Weird Science. Drawing on influences from the past and future, the collection pushes the boundaries of both and takes them to the next level. Think dresses hacked and fused with metal, moto jackets with unexpected twists, and an over-the-top shag jacket inspired by one of my favorite vintage finds. I hope you love it as much as we do.
Thursday, June 28, 2012 Sophia’s Corner: Sup, FORBES?
So…Forbes. When I was first contacted by Victoria, I was shocked — no business publication has yet told our story, while for years I’ve read Inc, Fast Company, Entrepreneur…all great magazines, but Forbes, man — it’s a gangster’s dream. It’s exciting and bewildering to think about how fast Nasty Gal has taken off. I’m so grateful to everyone who’s helped along the way, but equally as grateful to the naysayers. To someone like myself, hearing “no” on many occasions just means “be creative and NO becomes YES.” I think that’s the most exciting thing about what we’ve built — that if you say it, believe it, and move in your dreams’ general direction, it’s possible to do anything.
I look at the photos in the Forbes piece and think “do I look like a business lady?” and am terrified to know the answer. Yes, I’m a lady, and I do business. And I put on my Forbes face for this piece. But just like “NO” can mean “creative YES”, seeing myself in Forbes is an even greater reminder to KEEP IT WEIRD. After all, #nastygalsdoitbetter!
