Monday, November 17, 2008 Sophia’s Corner: Look Who I Found!
I’m finally back from NYC! It was a short trip and a successful one, but I’m looking forward to hunkering down over the upcoming holiday months to shoot and fill the store with as many goodies as we can!
I met up with the lovely Lulu on the last night of my trip, and hopped across the city’s many puddles to a few bars–from Plumm (read Lulu’s post for the full story on that adventure), to La Esquina (we gobbled down an entire half-chicken), and finally to the Max Fish, where we attracted many a creepazoid/hanger-on.

I think the weirdest/most awkward moment was when my eye began to hurt, and I asked Lulu if she could see if there was anything in it. The dude next to us overheard, and started rifling through his bag to get something, and then muttered “I have some eyedrops…”
I responded with a quick “Thank you, but I don’t really share eyedrops with strangers.” He looked pretty hurt and confused, but needless to say it was worth not risking pink eye or something worse.
Wednesday, November 12, 2008 Sophia’s Corner: Bicoastal Biz
I’ve recently fallen in love with Virgin America’s SF-NYC fares, and have found myself jetsetting back and forth between the coasts. I mean, it’s not only the fares–the planes are lit like a nightclub, play jazzy spa music, and have a pretty great onboard entertainment system.
Stopped by the NYLON office for a brief chat, which was wonderfully surreal, to say the least…

I’ll be back shooting again on Monday, so expect another big update by the end of next week!

Friday, October 17, 2008 Sophia’s Corner: New York, New York!
I’m jet-setting off to NYC for most of next week, but fret not! We’ll be adding a small batch of great vintage dresses to the shop on Monday, and you’ll still receive the usual lightning-fast shipping and great customer service you’ve come to expect around here. We’ll soon be stepping things up a good notch, with bigger weekly updates and an amazing holiday collection I think you’ll love. Thank you to everyone for your patience!

Friday, August 15, 2008 Sophia’s Corner: The Original NASTY GAL…

When I began selling vintage online nearly two years ago, I was faced with a task that every business owner encounters: finding a name for their business. For me, it was important to choose a name that represented an attitude as well as an aesthetic. The easy route would have been to hop on the hippie bandwagon and name it something sweet–but I felt that approach was just a little too familiar, and much softer than what I was going for.
I used to spend a lot of time collecting hard-to-find records, and unearthing unpopular or otherwise rare music that had fallen under the radar–sometimes for decades. I consulted my library for inspiration, and after little time I’d settled on the name of funkstress Betty Davis’ hard-hitting third album, NASTY GAL.
Once the wife of musician Miles Davis and an ex-runway model, she was a true sex symbol. Her lyrics were unabashedly raunchy and sex-drenched, and were accompanied by one of the the best rhythm sections of the era (or ever, for that matter). To put it shortly: she’s good stuff. Need proof?
“She was the first Madonna. But Madonna is more like Marie Osmond when compared to Betty Davis.” -Carlos Santana
It’s true.
