Wednesday, March 20, 2013 Film: Riding the Spring Breakers Hype Machine
You can’t leave the house without someone recommending Spring Breakers, the new weirdo star-studded grindhouse movie by director Harmony Korine. So, we sent our lovely web designer Martine to check it out and report back on what all this fuss is about!
Spring Breakers follows best friends Faith (Selena Gomez), Candy (Vanessa Hudgens), Brit (Ashley Benson), and Cotty (Rachel Korine) as they morph from stoned coeds to cold-blooded killers, encountering a thug alien (James Franco) along the way. It is a true exploitation film in the long tradition of busty, booze-y, beach-y grindhouse hits like The Pom Pom Girls and Blood Beach. Thankfully, however, director Harmony Korine avoids the kitschy mistake of full-on homage through his use of an utterly contemporary visual language inspired by tween culture, pornography, and other pop mythologies. If you need a reason, see it for the epic song and dance sequence that has us pirouetting around the office humming Britney Spears and holding imaginary AK-47s.
Top 3 Moments:
1. Favorite costume is a tie between the DTF sweatpants and the pink unicorn ski mask.
2. Best line of the movie: “Look at my shit. Look at my shit! I got my blue Kool-Aid.”
3. Overall, best scene is the absurdist Girls Gone Wild send-up featuring bikini-clad women doused in beer, melted popsicles, and various other liquids.
