Nicole Wray and Terri Walker, the soulful songbirds behind Lady, aren’t exactly new to the scene—even if their group would be found squarely in the “emerging” category. But these two have been working—by which they mean exercising those pitch perfect vocal chords—in the industry for years with the likes of Missy Elliot, The Black Keys and Mos Def to name a few. With this new project, produced and released by Williamsburg’s Truth and Soul Records, Lady’s poised to make some major waves with their own style of completely fresh, dance floor-ready, soul R&B.

When did you two first start making music together? Did you know it was magic from the beginning or was it more of a slow burn?

It was about 3 years ago. It was definitely something special and organic. It felt like it was meant to be.

Do you both come from the same place stylistically or was it more of a compromise/collaboration to develop your sound?

We both come from the hip-hop and R&B world. We both love to sing and are crazy as hell, so when [record label and production team] Truth and Soul came along with their sound, we fell in love with it and became Lady.

What do you think about the label “retro” for you music? Do you feel like it’s accurate or annoying?

It’s both accurate and annoying. People always want to put labels on things; we just want to make people feel good regardless of what genre it is.

Let’s talk about your name—what’s the message behind it?

The guys came up with the name actually. We were going go with our last names Walker/Wray like the whiskeys. But, we think it makes all the sense in the world as we are two ladies and when we sing together we are one! So the word Lady to us just means strong independent woman!

How do you describe your personal style and how does your look help or support what you do musically?

We definitely differ but somehow make it work. [Nicole is] more funky, young, sexy, flirty and experimental. [Terri] plays it safer. The look coincides with our personality, which you hear in our music. We keep it as real to us as possible.

Any pre-show rituals you’d care to share with us?

We drink a shot of whiskey and say a prayer to the higher power that controls the night.

What’s next for Lady?
