We don’t know what we love more about FKA twigs: her hypnotic dance moves (think: subdued belly dancer), her unique brand of style (gelled chola curls, strong brows, ornate septum ring, and a red lip? Yes, please), her unmatchable music videos (anime-esque “Water Me” is as absurd as it is simple) or her siren-like voice (just try listening to “Papi Pacify” and not falling into a lovely trance). What we do know is that we’re beyond excited to finally be witnessing all of that live at her El Rey Theatre show in Los Angeles tonight.
We’ve been fans of the London-based dancer-turned-musician (whose real name, Tahliah Barnett, is just as cool as her moniker) ever since her winking face graced the cover of i-D’s 2012 Just Kids issue when she had only two singles out (“Ache” and “Hide”) and was virtually impossible to Google. Now, she’s being dubbed as “music’s new It Girl” and her debut album—which just released on Monday—is being touted as “monumental” by Pitchfork. Tantalizing, surreal, regal, brazen, bizarrely beautiful—FKA twigs is everything we never knew we wanted to be.
The day of her record release, she tweeted, “The last two years have been the most testing of my entire life. But the most special thing has come from it. LP1, my baby. From me to you <3.”
Thanks for the long awaited gift, twigs. We absolutely adore it.
