Meet the Kick-Ass Women of 2017

Who runs the world?

In the wake of sexual harassment allegations, the Women’s March, and the #Metoo movement, 2017 handed us a new generation of iconic women. These are the women at the vanguard of change—the game-changers and silence breakers that deserve more than a round of applause. This year, we’re celebrating the badass female pioneers who are changing the world. From artists to activists, we’ve rounded up the beautifully strong women that ruled 2017.

With a political agenda as strong as her walk, Adwoa is the inspirational model we’ve been waiting for. At 25, the British muse and women’s rights activist has walked for Dior, Burberry, and other major designers, created a female-centric online platform, Gurls Talk, and won for Model of the Year in 2017. Leading discussions on a slew of topics including body image and mental health, Adwoa is a beacon of light in the fashion industry.

Self-taught 18-year-old director Hu Ranran might just be one the of the most influential young women in China right now. In August 2017, Hu released her 75-minute film “Escape”, one of the only transgender films in China—a country with strict censorship on homosexuality and transgender content. But Hu doesn’t care: she’s uploading the film for free on as many platforms on the internet as possible.

Behind the designs of fashion label Jourden comes Anais Mak, an emerging designer that’s causing a stir in the industry. Admittedly introverted, the Hong Kong-based designer lets her collections speak for her. Anais brings a female-focused perspective to the table with ultra-feminine designs inspired by women and their aspirations—and she’s already won a handful of awards.

Teddy shook the modeling scene back in September after revealing her transgender identity. The courageous model is making headlines as one of fashion’s leading faces—and this time, it’s not because of her modeling. As a transgender advocate, Teddy is changing the stigma and redefining beauty as we know it.

Author of best-selling book Milk and Honey and The Sun and Her Flowers, Rupi gained traction as one of Instagram’s favorite poets and one of the world’s freshest voices. The 24-year old Canadian has made strides in the industry, covering themes of love, sexual abuse, and family through beautiful, thought-provoking, and healing words.
