There’s nothing we at Nasty Gal love so much as standing in an open field listening to music—with hundreds of thousands of other people. Now that SXSW is in the rearview and festival season’s just getting started, we asked our in-house sonic youths to break down their summer fest dreams, either past or present.
BRETT, SR. PRODUCER
PAST: The Gathering of the Juggalos
“It’s like the Grand Guignol of contemporary American youth culture. I want to witness the horror with my own eyes. Half sadomasochism; half anthropological curiosity. Like Agent Scully’s, “I want to believe”, I want to be “down with the clown”.
Who To See: Insane Clown Posse, Fear Factory, Master P, and P.O.D.
LISA, JR. BUYER
PRESENT: Coachella Valley
“It’s the best for people watching. L.A. literally transfers to the desert that weekend so you end up running into everyone you know.”
Who To See: The xx, Beach House, Red Hot Chili Peppers (high school flashback!), Local Natives
ROYCE, USER EXPERIENCE DEVELOPER (aka roycifer)
PRESENT: Austin Psych Fest
“Everything is psych-whatever these days. Some bands are kinda stretching the psych umbrella, but I’m psyched on psych-everything.”
Who To See: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Black Mountain, Boris, The Black Angels, Om, Tamaryn, No Joy, Vinyl Williams, and Bass Drum of Death
PAST: Roadburn, 2011
“To this day, I dream of having attended Roadburn 2011 in Tilburg, Holland. It was curated by Sunn O))) who are encyclopedic when it comes to eclectic music.”
Who To See: Godflesh (at the time recently reunited), Scorn, Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Black Mountain, Ghost, Sourvein, Keiji Haino, and Master Musicians of Bukkake
CAT, PHOTO EDITOR
PRESENT: Iceland Airwaves
“This festival is the coolest because you’re watching staggering rock bands in an otherworldly volcanic island with geysers, lava fields and waterfalls to soak in after you wake up hung over with seven new friends.”
Who To See: Metz, Goat, No Joy, Baby in Vain, Kreator
Who To See: Because I want to get trapped in a closet with R Kelly, twerk it with A$AP Rocky & Kendrick Lamar, slow dance to Tom Petty and get weird with my buddies, Haim.
ALISSA, IMPORT PRODUCTION COORDINATOR
“Long Scandinavian summer days mean you can pack even more good music into your festival trip at Roskilde. Plus, there’s a 3D light show coming from Kraftwerk, which is basically as can’t-miss as you can get.”
Who to see: Rihanna, Crystal Castles, Foxygen, Kraftwerk, Kendrick Lamar, Savages
