Friday, April 27, 2012 Lessons From The Pros: Cool Cat

You asked for it! Following up on last week’s smoky eye, we are sending you off to the weekend with the one-and-only cat eye that we used this week on Chrishell. This look is an essential go-to – it’s super easy to apply after a practice session. Once you’ve mastered your talents from the perfect line to the dramatic swing, you’ll never want to go without it. Definitely the epitome of a cool cat.

1. Before you get your hands on the actual line process, first apply light foundation and powder for a nice glow. If you were wondering, we are using Chanel for both – Ultra Light Skin Perfection Make-up & Natural Finish Loose Powder.

2. Take an eyeliner brush with a fine tip and start at the inner corner as shown below, while you trace in sweeping motions along the lash line. Remember to keep the line thin at the beginning and work the thickness along the way, towards the end.  Our Stylist and Makeup Artist, Stacey, likes to use the cream eyeliner by Stila for a longer-lasting look (it comes in a little pot).

3. After you’ve started the line, stop at the outer corner of your lash line and look straight into the mirror to visualize where the “swing” should be. A good trick is to imagine a line that follows the natural curve of your lower lash line for this final step.

4. Change the positioning of your brush and extend the outer line into a fine-pointing, upward slide towards the brow bone. Here, you can get creative and change the length and thickness of the wing depending on your mood (and party plans)! A small swing adds shape to your eye that is subtle and cute. A longer, more dramatic one with a Cleopatra-esque vibe goes well with any little black dress.

Remember: the perfect cat-eye is something that needs a little bit of practice – and more importantly, patience! Try it a few times for practice before hitting the town. Once you’ve really practiced it – especially the little swing at the end – you can do it in seconds flat. A simple line like the one we use on Chrishell is great for day or night!

I’ve always wanted to do a cat eye, and this tutorial is fantastic! I really want to try it out, BUT…. I wear glasses (thick rimmed black ones), and I’m not sure how it would look. I love my nerd glasses – I’ve been wearing them for over ten years now, so they’re a part of my identity and signature style (I totes started the trend, btw!), and I’ve tried contacts but I don’t really like them.

Think I could get away with the cat eye liner *and* the glasses?

(p.s. You can check out my blog,, for pictures of me with my nerdtastic glasses)
