LA Made Nasty: After Party Vintage Makes a Comeback

We’re thrifting again. Go behind the scenes of our upcoming After Party Vintage drop as we hunt for inspiration with product developer Juliana McWilliams.

As Nasty Gal legend goes, we were started by a 20-something iconoclast with a thing for hoarding vintage, art directing the shit out of it, then slinging it on eBay. The thrill of that hunt–and the idea that everything good comes back round again–inspired us to bring back After Party, our line of reworked vintage that we can share with more than just one person. Think: denim, leather, thrifted army surplus all remade into special new things. It’s like the buzz of finding that special piece without the annoying part of actually finding it. And, like us, it’s completely made in Los Angeles.

We caught up with Juliana McWilliams, the LA-based Product developer behind the line, at the Melrose Trading Post in LA as she expertly picked through some vintage denim, leather, military goods and patches that inspired the collection–and we uncovered the magic of upcycling.

“The entire After Party Vintage line is made in Los Angeles. We think it’s really important to not only contribute to creating jobs in our local community but it’s also important to us to know that our workers are being paid a living wage and treated well. Plus, LA is where we’re from, and we’re constantly pulling inspiration from our community.” — Juliana

Juliana wears her favorite piece from the collection–a cropped denim jacket in overdyed black. “I love me a Canadian tux.”

“I think the reason After Party is so special is because it gives authenticity to your wardrobe. We start by looking at current trends and vintage and work on marrying the two. Nasty Gal styling has always been about mixing vintage (it’s part of our history!) and new and After Party pieces are all the things that are just better vintage.” — Juliana

“We reworked a lot of vintage army surplus jackets and cargo pants for this collection. Military jackets will forever remind me of Lindsay from Freaks and Geeks—an eternal style icon.”

YEP…we’re bringing these back.

“Denim is such a huge part of this line–think reworked jeans, denim jackets, cutoff skirts. Because it’s vintage all the washes are from age and wear, it’s something that can’t be replicated.”

“I’ve spent countless hours digging through vintage and I think what makes a vintage piece special is something that looks modern or can be styled in a modern way. There’s also those super collectible items that I’ll always love like Levi’s Big E jackets and vintage motorcycle jackets.”

“We brought back a lot of patchwork details as updates–think rosettes, lips, beading and military details. It updates the pieces so they feel special and modern.”

“We brought back the Up In Flames leather skirt (along with a few new leather styles as well). TBH you won’t find real leather anywhere else at this price point!”

After Party Vintage drops September 5th. Watch this space!
