By all conventional wisdom, actress Hayley Magnus should not have turned out normal. Despite having caught the acting bug at a very young age (“I think I came out of the womb mid-pose!”) the twenty five year old Australian beauty grew up telling the other kids she wanted to be a volcanologist, just to set herself apart (partly due to a few too many Dante’s Peak viewings). Her first real performance was as a pre-teen, as part of something they have down under called Tournament of the Minds, which is some weird hybrid of drama club and debate team they have in school (IDEK). She played a hillbilly who could only speak in rhyming couplets, and had to answer social science questions about the universal time code (no, for real). “It was the nerdiest of nerd things ever!” She insists she had friends and everything, (“do imaginary ones count?”) and after high school landed her first real gig, on popular Australian soap opera Home and Away. From there the quirky, brainy beauty landed a recurring role on a show called Slide, followed by several movie roles, eventually moving to Los Angeles last year. If you think moving to Hollywood has changed her, don’t: her favorite part about living here? “The opossums! They’re hilarious!”
Since Hayley did us the kindness of appearing in our Summer Garden Party editorial, I asked her to plan her perfect garden party. And guess what? It’s weird and charming, just like her:
From Space Oddity to Aladdin Sane and beyond, David Bowie’s bold-yet-badass, totally-out-of-this-world style evolution has truly been one of the greatest gifts of all—other than his killer hits over the years, of course. On his 67th birthday, we pulled together some of his most iconic (see: our favorite) looks from his ever-evolving wardrobe, which totally prove he’s a man who sticks to his word: “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
In a ideal world, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust makeup would be everyday wear, but depending on where you work, you might not be able to pull it off (here at Nasty Gal, we wouldn’t bat a well-lined eye). But since Halloween is right around the corner, and it’s the one night a year when unleashing your inner freak is not only accepted but encouraged, we tapped makeup artist extraordinaire Jen Budner to walk us through the steps for creating your own perfect lightning-strikes look.
During my two week romp through Europe, London was calling my name (queue The Clash) the whole time. And what a perfect city to visit before I headed back to sunny Los Angeles. Not only was I in town for an historic London moment with the birth of the Royal Baby (you capitalize Royal Baby, right?), but I also had quite a few moments that are going to go down in my own history books. Also, the above photo is at a restaurant. Don’t worry about it.
In light of our recent collaboration with Lazy Oaf, we decided to revisit some other songs where one + one = totally awesome.
