When I got to Cristina Black’s Angelino Heights apartment, she is relieved to reveal the project she’s been working on in secret for months: Blake Lively’s lifestyle site, Preserve, which premiered via her Vogue cover story that morning. It doesn’t surprise me that Black was asked to work in editorial on the Gossip Girl star’s venture. Black made a name for herself as a writer in New York as the entertainment editor at Foam while freelancing regularly for Nylon, Dazed & Confused, The Village Voice, and Time Out New York, amongst others. She’s an accomplished woman.
But almost two years ago, she dropped her life in New York and migrated to Los Angeles “in pursuit of the songwriter’s dream,” says Black. “Los Angeles has a vibe. I don’t know if it’s the weather or what, but I’m like this super-ultra version of myself in California. It’s letting me be who I actually am and, for once, that doesn’t feel like a fight. It feels like love maybe should.”
Black is also a trained pianist and harpist who has released a string of EPs of ethereal, dark melodies. The Ditty Sessions was critically acclaimed while her latest EP Ides of March is just about to surface. We went over to Black’s place to shoot some photos and talk about style.
