Meet the brains (and major babes) behind one of our favorite Aussie labels, Finders Keepers. Designers Kate Anderson and Amy Hicks share their sartorial offerings in the form of structured silhouettes and stand-out prints (think watercolored Miami skylines and kaleidoscopic florals) mixed with unexpected details like metal and mesh. Here, the dream team gives us the inside scoop on how the brand was born, its signature style, and the most embarrassing things hiding in their closets.

Hi Kate and Amy! Tell us a little bit about Finders Keepers and how it got started.

Finders Keepers was started in 2009 by design director Melanie Flintoft. Melanie saw a need for an affordable label that offered great design sensibility with quality fabrications and on-trend prints and colors.

Is there a specific girl you have in mind when you’re designing?

Finders Keepers is for the girl who takes untold pleasure in styling her look from head to toe. She is at the forefront of new trends and shining like a diamond in her sartorial choices.

What does a typical day look like for you?

We get into the office early and make a coffee of course! It’s nice when it’s quiet and no phones are ringing. Depending on where we’re at with our schedule, our day can consist of sketching a new range, looking for inspiration, organizing a photo shoot or fabricating styles. There is also a lot of time spent on our emails!

We have a serious crush on your latest lookbook, All Stars. Who or what was your inspiration?

All Stars is a repeat range, including all the best sellers from the past year or so. It is our favourite styles in one range, a combination of the best of the best, hence the name All Stars. If you were going to pick a fashion ‘dream team’ they would all be in it.

What piece can you not stop wearing from the collection right now?

We’re loving the You Sent Me t-shirt dress – works perfectly with a pair of converse, especially when we are running up and down the stairs all day.

What would you consider to be the Finders Keepers signature style?

The Finders Keepers signature style is a simple shape with a stand-out print!

What’s the most fun part of bringing a collection to life? The most difficult part?

We love photo shoot day! It is probably the most difficult and the most rewarding part! We shoot once a month and whilst it can be manic to organize, once you see the garments on the model it makes it all worth it.
Three months of very hard work is behind every collection. The lookbook allows us to bring this all together and really show off what we have been working on. Once we see the lookbook printed and edited, we breath a sigh of relief.

When you’re not dreaming up amazing designs in your studio, where are your favorite spots to eat/hang/shop in Adelaide?

Kate: I love Udaberri on Leigh Street for a sneaky Friday after-work drink. Andre’s Cucuina and Polenta Bar on Frome Street would have to be one of my favourite restaurants – amazing food, wine and service.
Amy: Ooh I have to ditto Kate on that one…Udaberri is definitely a fav hangout of ours. They have just started serving mulled wine, which is so warming over the colder months. I also love to head to the local markets; they’re just at our doorstep and you can find the most amazing food from all over the world.

What are some current fashion trends that you’re excited about?

We are obsessed with Tartan so there is a bit of that coming though. Also we are loving the sporty college vibe that we’re seeing everywhere.

What’s the least fashiony/borderline embarrassing piece of clothing that you own? Where and when do you wear it?

Kate: I have a ’90s John Farnham T-shirt that was bought for me by a friend. I’m a massive fan but have been told I’m only allowed to wear it around the house as its embarrassing.
Amy: I own a pair of Ben Ten slippers…weird I know, yet so good. They also have grip on the bottom so you can’t slip. These are definitely house shoes! Haha!

If you weren’t designing, what would you be doing?

Kate: Still something in fashion. I just love the industry…however I did always want to be a mermaid.

Amy: I really can’t imagine not working in the industry. I did want to be a vet though when I was younger.

Any secrets you can spill on what’s in the works for Fall ’13?

We have some amazing prints coming through, but you will have to wait and see!
