LOVE 21

Wednesday, May 9, 2012 Nasty Guys: Curtis Kulig, The ‘Love Me’ Dude

We’re sure you’ve seen LOVE ME scribbled all over the streets of NYC and LA, or maybe just your Tumblr feed. In case you’re curious about the mastermind behind the sweet request, we have the answer.

Meet Curtis Kulig, a guy who likes to get his hands dirty. From creating iconic graffiti and stickers to photography, painting and designing skateboards, he’s done it all…and is just getting started. We caught up with the East Coast artist to chat about everything from his favorite LA haunts to how he got into making the things we love.

Day to day:  Wake up. Take some time. Coffee. Croissant. Studio. Walk. Food. Walk. Studio. Walk. Email, email, phone, phone. Food. Home. Make List. Repeat.

On Photography: It’s like any other hipster with a point-and-shoot camera, but I love taking pictures and it’s a big part of my life. To capture a moment in time is amazing; I’m just into the whole documentation aspect. I like to shoot on film and Polaroid mostly. I wish I had a bit more time for it, but right now, painting is my main focus.

On Youth: I don’t know if it inspired me in a conventional sense, but my dad owned a screen print shop when I was growing up, so I had the chance to play with paint and color. I was never really into school – I had a hard time staying focused. For me, this has all sort of unfolded and made me what I am, but I think in a way that’s how anyone becomes anything. You just sort of do something over and over until that’s what you are.

On LA: I used to live in LA and I’m still around a lot. I guess the weather is just unbeatable. My favorite spot is Escuela Taqueria that my friend Steven Arroyo owns. The food is amazing. Cafe Midi is nice too, especially for lunch. It’s good to have a fancy dinner at Chateau Marmont, or visit a friend there and take a dip in the pool. I also spend a lot of time with Steve Olson at his place making stuff. MOCA is so amazing, Getty is amazing. LA gets a bad rep sometimes for not having ‘culture’ but that’s not true anymore.

On Gals and Guys: Is this a test? If it is, there’s a good chance I could fail. Women like to talk and relate. Men like to finish one thing and move on to the next.

On Projects: I’m busy right now with a lot of new things. You guys just have to wait and see.
