Turn off the OOO responder, it’s time to nurse your post-holiday hangover.
It’s 10pm, anxiety crashes your final hours of vacation, and you have to ruin your recently perfected holiday sleep schedule. We get it—recovering from the back-to-work blues is an uphill battle. And nothing says “Welcome back!” quite like 100+ unread emails. Although we can’t fill in for you at work, we’ve rounded up back-to-work movies to shake you out of feast mode.
Welcome back to the daily grind.
9 TO 5
Dolly Parton lassoing her misogynistic boss always has a knack for lifting us up. Featuring the holy trio of women –Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton–9 to 5 is a hilarious comedy that makes a compelling case for the importance of gender equality in the workplace. Feeling resistant to start the rise and grind again? This movie should do the trick.
THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Nothing like a Meryl Streep smirk to beat the back-to-work blues. Nominated for best actress, Streep plays the badass boss to Andy (Anne Hathaway) at a cutthroat fashion magazine. The hit film plays with the daunting (and sometimes relatable) idea of losing yourself to work. Plus, Andy’s transformation scene into an early aughts fashion icon will give you momentum to give a damn about your outfit tomorrow.
If you need someone to light the fire under your a**, Staten Island queen Tess will provide you with some serious motivation. Rocking a nostalgia-inducing ’80s hairdo, Tess trades in her big hoops in search of being more than a secretary. The determined New Yorker wades through the sexism of the workplace and doesn’t stop until she gets what she wants.
Feeling like sticking it to the man? The Academy Award-winning film Norma Rae will shake you out of complacency. The kickass Southern factory worker Norma Rae fights for her and her coworkers’ rights in the midst of unhealthy working conditions. She’ll you give a much-needed confidence boost when you’re not so ready for what work may bring.
When you feel like you need the strength to take on literally everything, Erin Brockovich is a must-watch. As a single mom of three and not a whole lot of luck on her side, Erin winds up investigating a cover-up involving toxic waste that’s killing local residents. She ends up in one of the biggest lawsuits in American history. BTW—it’s a true story.
