Play Back: Queen of Soul

TGIM. We’ve got you covered with another killer soundtrack.

By Artemis Thomas-Hansard

We lost one of music’s greats last week, and as a tribute to Aretha Franklin, we’ve gathered some of our favorite tracks by the late soul pioneer/OG feminist anthem-maker (and also the one who taught us all how to spell “respect”—thanks, girl.) Mid-century era masterpieces mixed with new-soul hits by the artists Franklin inspired (Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone and Lianne La Havas, to name a few), this playlist celebrates the timelessness of soul music—and, especially, the women who have mastered it. Get your vocal chords warmed up, Nasty Gals, it’s time for a Motown marathon.
