beauty is boring

Jodie Smith was the star of our Loud and Clear lookbook, and now we’re seeing her loud and clear on our TV screens on True Blood, where she’s one part model and one part kickass vamp star. We caught up with Jodie to get the deets on beauty secrets, dating vampires in real life, and how nudity can help clear social stigmas.

What’s your favorite thing to wear?

I’m definitely a headwear kind of girl. I own a hundred scarves, and 9 out of 10 times you will see me wearing a head wrap that pays homage to my African roots. But since it’s blazing hot LA summer right now, my current favorite is this gorgeous straw and beaver felt hat that I had custom made by Nick Fouquet over at Westbrook Maker in Venice.

How did you go from modeling to acting?

I did a lot of theatre and musical theatre performances when I was younger and I loved it. It took almost four years of living in a town known for acting, but then I finally decided one day that it was time to be more than a silent face in a picture. I have so much respect for the craft, and I’m just enjoying studying it and seeing what I’m capable of.

What’s a typical day like on the True Blood set?

Hours of messy and not-quite comfortable f/x makeup, and even more hours of laughing with a cast and crew that are having a lot of fun doing their job.

What’s your best kept beauty secret?

Coconut oil. I use it as an all-over moisturizer, hair conditioner, teeth whitener, tanning oil/sunscreen, cuticle oil…the list goes on! Taken internally, it’s a natural brain and energy booster and it’s full of healthy fats.

What if you met a really hot vamp in real life? Obviously dating him would be dangerous, but would you still do it?

If he was my ideal man, then I think I could overlook the whole undead thing. I mean, it’s sort of what Morissey had in mind when he sang “to die by your side, is such a heavenly way to die,” right?

Tell us something about you that no one would ever know.

I’m afraid of the dark.

If you were an exotic beverage, which would you be?

Picante de la Casa! Tequila is the most feared of all spirits for its tendency to cause wild behavior, but this drink is made with a smooth, subtle and complex reposado tequila. The rest of it is a delicious combination of sour, sweet and very spicy. Basically, me in a nutshell.

How often do you drink human blood when you aren’t on set?

My official answer is”never,” but considering the fact that my nickname in school was “Black Widow,” I’ll let you make your own assumptions.

Do vampires and zombies get along? We’ve always wondered.

NO ONE gets along with zombies.

If you were asked to clear the stigma about vampires being violent, how would you do it?

I think turning up completely naked is definitely serving to distract from the violence factor.
