Halloween is upon us—get ready to dress the part with this step-by-step DIY guide on how to Halloween-ify your old jeans with AJ, the Northern Irish London College of Fashion student revolutionising all things fashion upcycling. Give your once favorite jeans a new lease of life this spooky season with a touch of spray paint and homemade stencils, then voilà, a homemade Halloween costume you can totally wear throughout the year too. Read on.

What you will need:

  • Jeans
  • Fabric spray paint
  • Printer and paper
  • Images (easily found on Google)
  • Cardboard (AJ used pizza boxes)
Step One

Step One

Lay out your jeans and put some scrap paper inside them so the spray paint doesn’t leak through.

Step Two

Step Two

Next, search for the spider images that you want to spray onto the jeans. Make sure to re-size the images to a size that will fit onto the cardboard, while leaving some extra space at the sides so you don’t over spray, and then go ahead and print out.

Step Three

Step Three

Take your printed paper and lay it over your cardboard, then glue or tape down.

Step Four

Step Four

Use a small craft knife or scissors and start cutting out your image, making sure to cut through both the paper and the cardboard.

TIP – using cardboard will be more stable than paper when spray painting jeans.

Now it’s time to get nasty…

First get your spray paint and do some random freehand spider webs! Then take your cardboard cut outs, lay them over the jeans, and start spraying over them. Repeat this step all over the jeans. Super easy!

TIP – use scrap paper to put around the outsides of cut outs. This will catch any overspray so it doesn’t get onto parts of the jeans you don’t want it to.

To finish off the jeans I took red fabric spray paint and went over some of the images to give them a cool two tone effect! Then finished off by cutting the hems and fraying to give them an extra edgy look.
