Another day, another Shoe Cult disciple! This morning, we’re gettin’ down with NYC DJ/singer/total babetron Eiko Hara. When she’s not mastering her less-is-more ’90s aesthetic, she contributes to Elle Japan and makes some of the sickest mixes to boot. There’s (truly!) nothing better than a fashionable girl with a great taste in tunes, so we had Eiko create the ultimate Nasty Gal playlist—and, of course, share some of her killer style tips along the way.

Tell us the inspiration behind the playlist you created.

Girls, girls, girls!!!

How would you describe your sound?

Disco, funk, ’90s funky hip hop.

How does music influence your personal style?

TLC was stuck in my head the other week, so I was into ’90s style for a bit.

Who are some of your style icons?

Hmm, I don’t really have one, but I love Lou Doillon’s style.

How did you end up becoming a DJ?

My girls and I used to go out almost every night (almost 5 to 6 years ago), and we started thinking, “If we go out every night anyway, why don’t we just DJ?” We know lots of cool music, we are fun, we get free drinks and we dance all night long. Not bad at all! We just did it, and then I got more serious about music.

Tell us your process for picking out the perfect DJing outfit.

It depends on how I feel that day, but usually I DJ in a T-shirt and shorts with my platform shoes. Sometimes I wear a long black dress with dark red lipstick.

What’s your go-to karaoke song? Why?

“Lovefool” by The Cardigans. Who doesnt like that song?! It also means I don’t have to sing like Whitney Houston.

What’s a typical Saturday night for you?

Going out with my girls or staying in my bed watching Japanese comedy shows with some food and Coca-Cola.

What are you doing when you’re not DJing?

Making music. I’m working on my second EP right now.

What’s next style-wise for you?

Boyfriend casual, anything tartan, and knee-high boots.
