Thursday, June 19, 2014 Bringin’ It Back: Bandits in Bandeaus

popcover2

There really should be a fan club that celebrates what Richard Prince and Abbey Lee created for Pop in 2010. If there isn’t, then I will make one and text all of you about it. It’s been four years since the editorial came out, but the leather-loaded images still make me want to ride a bike or buy a gun holster or both. Lucky for all of us, we just rounded up enough Western wear to last us until the cows come home.

Thursday, June 19, 2014 Studio Soundtracks: History Lesson: Three Girl Groups From The 60s You Should Know

The-Cake-band

I always assume that most people know about the greatness that was the girl groups of the 60‘s, but maybe you don’t? The Shangri-Las, The Ronettes, The Chiffons, The Supremes, The Crystals, The Dixie-Cups and many more all ruled the airwaves during that time with sweet triple harmonies conceived either by old man producers or themselves. Thursday, June 19, 2014 Role Model: Gals Of Summer: Gabby Datau

IMG_5121

Gabby Datau isn’t easy to label. The Los Angeles native is a freelance graphic designer by trade, but she spends her free time making all sorts of cool stuff: including clothing, collages, and music (her father is a musician and Datau has been in bands, from “shoegaze garage to surf rock to sludge/stoner metal to hardcore punk” since high school).. The 23 year old studied music in high school and art at prestigious college Cal Arts, where she studied graphic design.” When I was in school, I was mostly interested in typography, gender constructs, and music experiments,” Gabby says when asked about her art style. She’s currently working on design work out of a studio downtown with her best friend, and also making noise and electronic music on her own. We asked the brainy beauty a few questions about her work and inspirations.

This weekend, hundreds of Californians headed to Palm Springs in the name of aquatic party hopping. Splash House, which is basically Coachella with water, attracted an eclectic group of music lovers– 90% of them dressed in platforms and neon bathing suits, 100% with a tropical drink in hand. We sent a few of our Nasty Gals to take a dip!
